Senator Tom Coburn Offers Cheaper Solution To Fix Border Surge

Daily Caller -- Oklahoma U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn says he has a much better solution to fix the problem presented by tens of thousands of illegal Central American immigrants that have been apprehended at the southern U.S. border.

“Look, for $8 million you could put them all on a first-class seat back to their homes,” Coburn said on CNN’s “Crossfire” on Tuesday.

Coburn was answering a line of questioning concerning the Obama administration’s announcement on Tuesday that it would be asking Congress for $3.7 billion to help deal with the 52,000 unaccompanied children and 39,000 mothers with children who have been apprehended since Oct. 1.

The influx has drained resources from border protection and immigration agencies, as well as the Department of Health and Human Services.

The administration’s plan to increase spending is “the wrong approach,” Coburn said.

He rebutted a claim made by many Democrats and administration officials that the immigrants are flocking here — mostly from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala — to flee rampant violence in those countries.

“This isn’t about violence. Some of it is,” Coburn said, while pointing out that violence has not changed significantly in two of the three countries, and has actually fallen in one.

Rather, the administration’s immigration policies are leading them to believe they can stay in the U.S.

“What changed was the expectation that you could come here, and you wouldn’t be sent home,” Coburn said.

The Obama administration has adopted a policy of deporting only violent criminals. It has also enacted a program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, which provides amnesty to people who arrived to the U.S. as children.

Coburn also supported the reversal of a 2008 anti-sex trafficking law that requires Customs and Border Protection to hand unaccompanied children from countries that do not border the U.S. to the Department of Health and Human Services, which houses them and seeks to place them with sponsors while they await deportation proceedings.

“What we have to do is change the 2008 law, and say, if you’re not contiguous with us, we’re going to treat you just like you were contiguous with us,” Coburn told CNN.

“We can change that in two weeks in the Senate and the House. Just reverse that law, retroactively.”

Asked if he opposes Obama’s $3.7 billion funding proposal — which was nearly double the administration’s initial $2 billion request Coburn said he does.

“I’m opposing that money because the money’s going to be asked for again next year,” he said.

Coburn also commented on public opposition to Obama’s stance on immigration, saying that resentment towards the administration’s policies is aimed at a deeper issue.

“It’s not immigration,” said Coburn. “It’s that they don’t see our government enforcing our laws.”
Blog author's comments - Obama does not want a solution to this problem. He wants an immigration bill passed. The bill that was sent from the Senate to the House was wrong for the country so the House chose not to pass it. Because Obama always wants every thing his way and refuses to work with the GOP, what we are now seeing with the flood of illegals, I believe, was planned and orchestrated by the Obama administration.

If the House voted to change the 2008 law and it passed, I doubt that it would in the Senate. Obama does not want it changed, not while he can use it to his advantage.

And now Obama is using the excuse that he cannot stop the surge of illegals because the Republican controlled House has not yet given him the $3.7 billion funding proposal he needs and without it he cannot put a stop to the flood of illegals. Has there ever been a single problem during his five plus years as president that was not the fault of others, such as George W. Bush or the Republicans? The illegals will continue to come to America and those who are now here will not be returned to their own countries, which is exactly what Obama wants.

Time To Stop Taxpayer Funding Of NPR

White House Stands By NPR:
"A Worthwhile And Important Priority"

real clear politics - "We believe that -- or rather we do not support calls to eliminate funding for National Public Radio and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

As is evidenced by -- we think they're -- they are worthwhile and important priorities as our budget makes clear," White House press secretary Jay Carney said today.

NPR executive and NPR CEO fired

NPR executive Ron Schiller was the first to go. NPR chief executive officer Vivian Schiller resigned Wednesday in the wake of a sting video that showed fundraiser and NPR executive Ron Schiller (no relation) caught on hidden camera disparaging conservatives, the tea party movement, and former NPR political analyst Juan Williams who was fired in October.

Last week, two Republican senators introduced another bill to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which also funds NPR.

President Barack Obama had set aside $451 million for public media in his proposed budget.

With congressional Republicans renewing efforts to defund NPR and Public Broadcasting, the timing of this video sting could not be worse for the embattled publicly-funded entity which purports to be a “news organization.”

Blog author's comments - It is time for the government to stop the help they provide in funding NPR. Many critics, me included, say NPR is liberally biased and taxpayers shouldn't be forced to support them.

Some advocates of cutting off funding say NPR should make up the money from other sources and become more independent.

Obama of course wants to continue funding them as another leftist prop for the Democrats. There should be no government media.

Most conservatives have always known that NPR leans to the left politically. Now many more should also know this if they have seen the video featuring the NPR employee.
