Truth Revolt -- Notorious leftist Nancy Pelosi made a statement that surely caught some off guard, if for no other reason than its brazen honesty.
When asked about Republicans’ potential hesitation to join the Democrats in a ban on “bump stock” accessories like the ones possibly used in the Las Vegas massacre, the House Minority Leader had very little regard for any “give them an inch, and they’ll take a mile” concerns on the part of her political adversaries. “How do you plan to overcome [GOP resistance] when the truth is that you would like to go further?” the reporter queried. In an act of either surprisingly respectable transparency or political grandstanding, Pelosi said:
“So what? They’re going to say, ‘You give them bump stocks, it’s going to be a slippery slope.’ I certainly hope so."That's a powerful statement. And scary. She continued:
"But I don’t think bump stocks should be a substitute for the background check. By the way, the background check is a compromise. There are many more things members want to do, and we’re saying, ‘How do we save the most lives?’ We save the most lives with a background check.”The ban on bump stocks is gaining support from both Republicans and Democrats, as well as from an especially surprising group: the NRA. The firearms accessory essentially transforms a semi-automatic rifle into an automatic weapon by using the recoil of the gun to enact a back-and-forth movement which rapidly pulls the trigger.
The Democrats will doubtlessly use increased openness to a bump stock ban as an opportunity to try and throw a noose over the head of the Second Amendment. With an affirmative nod toward that ambition by the party’s leader in the House, it’s clear that care will have to be taken by Republicans, the majority of whom are, incidentally, against universal background checks.
It’s wise to fear Nancy Pelosi; if she’s given an inch, the mile she would like to take is one of extremely radical leftism.
Blog Author's Comments: The author of this article gives Pelosi and the Democrats way too much credit for what they would like to accomplish because of the shooting in Las Vegas. Some of the spineless Republicans could go belly up on the subject of 'bump stocks' but that should be as far as they ever go, along with the NRA. Personally, I would not give in on the 'bump stocks' or anything. If this does not go their way the Democrats will use this to portray the Republican Party and NRA as uncaring and unsympathetic to what happed to so many of the innocent people who were gunned down by the crazed shooter. The "bump stock" was approved by Obama and the Democrats, including the ignorant Pelosi. Now she and members of her party want to use it to attempt to gain some points in their continuous war on guns.
This should not be a ‘slippery slope'. No more gun laws period, enforce the laws we already have. From information I have seen the Las Vegas shooter; Paddock, underwent and passed a federal background check for every firearm he purchased. And if I am not mistaken he had bump stocks on only a few of the weapons he used, many of the others were fully automatic rifles. But, this bump stock subject has been a gift to the left to continue their fight against gun ownership.
To address a few more of the statements made by the author, a 'bump stock' does not “essentially transform a semi-auto rifle into an automatic weapon”. It does increase the rate of fire, but an automatic weapon fires as long as the trigger is held down. In addition, the shooter using a rifle with a 'bump stock' must maintain forward pressure on a bump stock for it to operate. The addition of the bump stock was designed and made legal because some rifle shooters have limited hand mobility and the stock helped them fire the gun. If the device transformed a semi-auto rifle into an automatic rifle it would be illegal. Second, the majority of the GOP is not against “universal background checks” which are already used. What they are against is a nationwide database of all gun owners and specifically what they own. And following that would be a yearly tax imposed on the gun owner.
The term 'background check' was created by Democrats and the media to portray the proposal as addressing an issue that does not exist. What the GOP opposes is a background check which would be virtually impossible on private gun purchases which only make up about 2% of annual gun sales. Using incorrect and outright false terms does not help. If we want to keep winning this fight we have to use information and terms that accurately describe the issues. Using “essentially” the talking points of Democrats and the anti-gun zealots is not favorable and does not help the law abiding, legal gun owners.
