Not New York Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon. He’s not thankful, and let America know by kneeling during the National Anthem on Thanksgiving.
The Hill Reports:
New York Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon continued his protest on Thursday night, kneeling during the national anthem before a game against the Washington Redskins.White House social media director Dan Scavino took to Twitter Friday, denouncing Vernon’s decision to kneel.
Vernon, who has been kneeling since early on in the NFL season, appeared to be the only player to take a knee before the game.
[…] Prior to last Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Vernon told Newsday that he would continue kneeling, even as criticism of the protests continues.
“What it would take for me to stand is if people can understand what the whole message is behind it,” he told Newsday. “That would actually help a whole lot, but everybody doesn’t see things that way and tries to distort what the message was from the beginning, which is basically social injustice on African-Americans and police brutality.”
“While @NFL ratings continue to plummet… Not So Thankful: @Giants @OlivierVernon54 Kneels During the National Anthem on Thanksgiving Day (while a Master Sergeant of the United States Army sings) at FedEx Field,” tweeted Scavino.
President Trump, who is on the front lines in America’s culture war, made sure to rip into Vernon and the NFL.
“Can you believe that the disrespect for our Country, our Flag, our Anthem continues without penalty to the players. The Commissioner has lost control of the hemorrhaging league. Players are the boss!”, tweeted President Trump.
Blog Author's Comments: The latest numbers I have seen which seem quite low, show NFL players have been arrested 855 times since 2000. This includes 215 DUI charges, 99 drug charges, 96 domestic violence cases, 71 assaults and two murders. No wonder they don't like the police. America can survive without the American athlete, but it cannot survive without the American Soldier. It is probably best that some of these NFL players do not go into the neighborhoods in the cities where they live or their team plays, to speak to the youngsters. They probably shouldn't be permitted to influence the impressionable youth.
We continue to hear about police brutality. If their 'brothers' were law abiding, there would be no problem, such a simple concept that escapes these people. Olivier Vernon may stop kneeling when everybody sees things his way. Good luck with that, because fewer and fewer people are seeing him do anything because of the loss of many who have stopped watching the games. Who would have thought that giving thanks would be controversial? Gratitude has no color, but apparently ingratitude does. I am glad that we have a President who is not afraid to declare a cultural war on these thankless people and the NFL commissioner. And Roger Goodell's plan for next season is to keep the teams in the locker room until the anthem is over so there are no protests that the NFL viewers can see. Some of these players will just come up with something else in an attempt to continue their revolt and complaints.
NFL viewership and attendance numbers may be in free fall, but NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is hoping that the league's owners are just fine with handing him a steep pay hike for his unparalleled leadership skills. Goodell, who has presided over one of the most controversial seasons in NFL history — as players and coach’s battle over whether it is appropriate to kneel in protest during the national anthem — is nearly out of a job. His five-year contract comes to an end after this season. He would like a five year extension so that he can continue to shepherd the NFL through this difficult time with his expert hand, but since he's done such a good job, he believes his contract should go from a cool $30 million to $50 million per year. In addition, Goodell says he should have lifetime use of the league's private jet — without restriction — as well as a lifetime of health insurance benefits.
