House Leaders Campaign For Amnesty

Politico -- CAMBRIDGE, Md. — The House Republican leadership is trying to sell their colleagues on a series of broad immigration principles, including a path to legal status for those here illegally.

Speaker John Boehner’s leadership team introduced the principles at their annual policy retreat here. Top Republicans circulated a tightly held one-page memo titled “standards for immigration reform” toward the tail-end of a day that include strategy conversations about Obamacare, the economy and the national debt.

In the private meeting where the language was introduced, Boehner (R-Ohio) told Republicans that the standards are “as far as we are willing to go.”

”Nancy Pelosi said yesterday that for her caucus, it is a special path to citizenship or nothing,” Boehner said, according to a source in the room. “If Democrats insist on that, then we are not going to get anywhere this year.”

Boehner said the standards represent “a fair, principled way for us to solve this issue.”

The strategy marks a shift for House Republicans. In 2013, Boehner’s chamber ignored the bipartisan immigration reform bill passed by the Senate. But toward the end of last year and early this year, Boehner, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) began hashing out this approach to rally Republicans toward reform.

“It’s important to act on immigration reform because we’re focused on jobs and economic growth, and this is about jobs and growth,” Boehner said in his pitch in the closed meeting. “Reform is also about our national security. The safety and security of our nation depends on our ability to secure our border, enforce our laws, improve channels for legal entry to the country, and identify who is here illegally.”

Blog author’s comments – What the Republican ‘leadership’ is doing is insane. Just when they have a good chance of both retaining the House and perhaps winning control of the Senate, they now believe that passing an immigration bill will help the party and the country. Instead of continuing to campaign on what Obama and the Democrats have already done to America with Obamacare, they take the focus off of that and want to pass an immigration reform bill which the majority of the people do not want.

This could well be the end of the Republican Party. We haven't seen the GOP act much like the opposition party yet. Whenever some Republicans do pop up in opposition, they get cut down by other Republicans. We already have a pathway for the illegals to citizenship, follow the laws which are already in place. What the Republicans are doing is fantastic for the Democrats. If the House bill passes, the Democrats will be well on their way to a permanent majority. But for whatever reason the Republican Party leadership cannot see that.

Ted Cruz: The Imperial Presidency Of Barack Obama

Wall Street Journal (By Sen. Ted Cruz R-TX) -- Of all the troubling aspects of the Obama presidency, none is more dangerous than the president’s persistent pattern of lawlessness, his willingness to disregard the written law and instead enforce his own policies via executive fiat. On Monday, Mr. Obama acted unilaterally to raise the minimum wage paid by federal contracts, the first of many executive actions the White House promised would be a theme of his State of the Union address Tuesday night.

The president’s taste for unilateral action to circumvent Congress should concern every citizen, regardless of party or ideology. The great 18th-century political philosopher Montesquieu observed: “There can be no liberty where the legislative and executive powers are united in the same person, or body of magistrates.” America’s Founding Fathers took this warning to Rule of law doesn't simply mean that society has laws; dictatorships are often characterized by an abundance of laws. Rather, rule of law means that we are a nation ruled by laws, not men. That no one—and especially not the president—is above the law. For that reason, the U.S. Constitution imposes on every president the express duty to "take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed." America's Founding Fathers took this warning to heart, and we should too.[...]

President Obama has a different approach. As he said recently, describing his executive powers: "I've got a pen, and I've got a phone." Under the Constitution, that is not the way federal law is supposed to work.

The Obama administration has been so brazen in its attempts to expand federal power that the Supreme Court has unanimously rejected the Justice Department's efforts to expand federal power nine times since January 2012.

There is no example of lawlessness more egregious than the enforcement—or nonenforcement—of the president's signature policy, the Affordable Care Act. Mr. Obama has repeatedly declared that "it's the law of the land." Yet he has repeatedly violated ObamaCare's statutory text.

Abuse Of Power

Blog author’s comments - The fact that Obama does what he wants with no consequences is what bothers me. But apparently no one is going to stop him or anyone else in his administration. Obama had to take an oath to uphold the Constitution. Once in office, he has many times ignored the Constitution. Now we see him trample on the Constitution. A good column by Senator Ted Cruz concerning his opinion about what Obama is doing and has done.

We cannot assume that the GOP will win the Senate or even retain the House in 2014. There are less than ten months before the midterm elections, and a lot can happen for Obama to convince the voters that the Democrats should again be in full control. Obama and the Democrats know that they cannot be honest and sell their beliefs. So they have to sound like people they are not, and they are good at doing this. We shall see what the Republicans will do to show the voters they can and want to change what is now happening in Washington.

Obama Wants Mayors To Help Him Bypass Congress

ABC News -- President Obama told a group of mayors at the White House on Thursday that he’s relying on them to help advance his agenda when Congress won’t act.

“I want to work with Congress whenever and wherever I can. But the one thing I’m emphasizing to all my Cabinet members is we’re not going to wait,” Obama told a group of 250 mayors at the White House. “Where Congress is debating things and hasn’t been able to pull the trigger on stuff, my administration’s going to move forward, and we’re going to … do it in partnership with all of you.”

“Every day mayors are proving that you don’t have to wait for the gridlock to clear in Congress in order to make things happen,” he said.

Vice President Joe Biden said mayors are “the one group of elected officials that get things done in large part because you have no option but to get things done.”

The mayors were in Washington, D.C., for the winter meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. They also attended meetings at the White House with administration officials on Thursday.

There was a lighthearted moment at the start of the event, when the vice president, introducing the president, reminded the mayors who exactly he works for.

“Welcome to the White House. My name is Joe Biden. I work for President Obama,” Biden said to applause. “Best job I ever had.”
Blog author’s comments – So Obama and his fellow Democrats cannot do their job without help from the mayors? Obama said “I want to work with Congress whenever and wherever I can.” What he meant was “as long as they do only and exactly everything I want them to do.” When has Obama ever wanted to work with the Republicans in Congress? Only if they give him what he wants. Obama cannot govern and do his job as president unless he has the House.

Make no mistake about it, this is his prime objective in 2014, that the Democrats take back the House so he can accomplish what he wants to do which is to continue to ‘fundamentally transform’ the country during his last two years in office. If this does not happen we will see one Executive Order after another, because hopefully, that will be the only recourse he will have.

Obama Plays The Race Card Because Of His Lower Approval Ratings

Bloomberg -- President Barack Obama said that racial tensions may have softened his popularity among white voters within the last two years, according to a story posted on the New Yorker magazine’s website today.

“There’s no doubt that there’s some folks who just really dislike me because they don’t like the idea of a black president,” Obama said in the article by David Remnick, appearing in the magazine’s Jan. 27 edition.

“Now, the flip side of it is there are some black folks and maybe some white folks who really like me and give me the benefit of the doubt precisely because I’m a black president,” Obama said in his most direct comments on how race has affected his political standing since he’s been in office.

Obama’s second term has been marked by controversies including a partial government shutdown in October, revelations that the National Security Agency has gathered personal mobile phone data and the troubled rollout of health-insurance expansion.

Obama’s approval rating among all voters is 39 percent and his disapproval rating is 53 percent, according to a Gallup Poll conducted Jan. 14-16.

Blog author’s comments - Naturally, Obama believes his lower approval ratings are all about race. He does not think they would have anything to do with his policies and agenda for the country, and what he has done during the five years he has been in office. His falling polling numbers have nothing to do with the color of his skin, it is in part because of his performance and that he has run roughshod over the Constitution.

The majority of people did not, and even more so now, don’t want Obamacare and are aware of the Employer Mandate in 2015. I also don’t believe the people want amnesty for the illegals. I doubt that he believes the scandals he and his administration have been involved in have any bearing on his popularity. Perhaps some of the voters are waking up and now see the damage Obama, Reid, Holder and his entire administration have done. Obama by assuming that people can’t have differences of opinion, that it has to be about race, shows us even more about the type of person he is.

National Football League - NFC and AFC Championship Games Today

AFC Championship - New England at Denver 3:00p.m. on CBS

Blog author's comments - Today the NFL features two games showcasing four very good teams. In my opinion both games are a tossup. Regarding the game at Seattle, Seattle should probably be the favorite to win but because of San Francisco's quarterback Colin Kaepernick, I am leaning towards San Francisco. Kaepernick could well be the deciding factor in the game.

New England and Denver, it’s too bad these two teams are in the same conference. This would be a good Super Bowl matchup. The two quarterbacks, I believe, are the best in the National Football League, and I have been a fan of both the Patriot's Tom Brady and Bronco's Peyton Manning for a long time. I also believe that the Patriot's coach, Bill Belichick is the best head coach in the NFL. Because the game is at Denver this helps Denver and the Broncos should probably be the favorite, but I would like to see New England win.

It would not surprise me if I am wrong about both games because at this point all four teams are capable of winning. For those who do not follow the NFL the winners of these two games play in the SUPER BOWL, Sunday, February 2, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Obama Vows More Executive Action

The Hill -- President Obama vowed Tuesday to use the power of his office where necessary to advance an aggressive 2014 policy agenda.

Heading into a Cabinet meeting, Obama expressed optimism that Congress would take action on numerous major pieces of legislation, including a trillion-dollar 2014 spending bill unveiled late Monday, immigration reform and a measure to extend unemployment benefits.

The president, however, also pledged that, “we are not just going to be waiting for a legislation in order to make sure that we’re providing Americans the kind of help that they need.”

“I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone, and I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions and administrative actions that move the ball forward,” he said.

Obama broadly listed education, support for businesses, and job training as areas in which executive action might be needed, though he did not elaborate on the specifics of any proposals.

Blog author's comments - Obama is again showing his arrogance by saying he can write executive orders to do what he wants and does not need Congress. He has been the president and running the country for the past five years and his plan to transform America, his policies and agenda are the reasons the economy is in the shape that it is. This is why 92 million people are out of the workforce, and why 47 million people require food stamps.

Obama cannot govern without having both the Senate and the House, because he refuses to work with the Republicans in the House. He has his agenda for the next three years and apparently feels he can accomplish whatever he wants with executive action. It is my hope that what 'Obamacare' alone has done and will do, has awakened enough of the voters including the low-information people, so that Obama will not have the House or the Senate by the end of this year.

Bailing Out Health Insurers And Helping Obamacare

Weekly Standard -- Robert Laszewski—a prominent consultant to health insurance companies—recently wrote in a remarkably candid blog post that, while Obamacare is almost certain to cause insurance costs to skyrocket even higher than it already has, “insurers won’t be losing a lot of sleep over it.” How can this be? Because insurance companies won’t bear the cost of their own losses—at least not more than about a quarter of them. The other three-quarters will be borne by American taxpayers.

For some reason, President Obama hasn’t talked about this particular feature of his signature legislation. Indeed, it’s bad enough that Obamacare is projected by the Congressional Budget Office to funnel $1,071,000,000,000.00 (that’s $1.071 trillion) over the next decade (2014 to 2023) from American taxpayers, through Washingon to health insurance companies. It’s even worse that Obamacare is trying to coerce Americans into buying those same insurers’ product (although there are escape routes). It’s almost unbelievable that it will also subsidize those same insurers’ losses.

But that’s exactly what it will do—unless Republicans take action. As Laszewski explains, Obamacare contains a “Reinsurance Program that caps big claim costs for insurers (individual plans only).” He writes that “in 2014, 80% of individual costs between $45,000 and $250,000 are paid by the government [read: by taxpayers], for example.”

Blog author's comments - The Obamacare insurance company bailout. This is absurd but not really a surprise. Most of us knew the ACA would never be able to exit without the taxpayers funding it.

Obama and the Democrats continue to spend even more money that they don't have. And by the time Obama is gone from office the country will never recover from the debt he has heaped upon it. Obamacare is not going away any time soon, but I am hopeful that many Democrats who voted for the ACA will be gone after the 2014 election.

DeFazio: U.S. Must Regulate Carbon Emissions And 'Force' Other Countries

CNS News -- Blasting Republican "climate-change deniers" as well as "blathering idiots on talk shows" who joked about the "Arctic vortex," Rep. Peter DeFazio urged Congress to tackle climate change in 2014. He called it one of the "biggest challenges of our time."

He wants the Obama administration to regulate carbon emissions as pollution. And "even if we take strong measures here, we've got to force those measures on other countries," he said in a five-minute speech on the House floor Wednesday.

"Now how are we going to get China and other countries lined up on this?" DeFazio asked. He called trade agreements a "strong tool" to demand reductions:

"We can't put U.S. manufacturers at a disadvantage when they are dealing with climate change issues and carbon dioxide emissions and the Chinese aren't, 'cause we live, unfortunately, on the same planet as the Chinese and they're destroying the world's climate very, very quickly. So even if we take strong measures here, we've got to force those measures on other countries," he said.

And how are we going to 'force' these measures on any other country, much less China? Obama and the Democrats have lowered our standing in the world to a point that what America says no longer matters. I don't believe China and many other countries are worried about the United States attempting to force them to take the same 'measures' as the majority of the left wants.

Jovan Belcher's Mother Sues Kansas City Chiefs For Wrongful Death

Kansas City Star -- Jovan Belcher’s mother has filed a wrongful-death suit against the Chiefs, seeking unspecified damages after the former linebacker killed his girlfriend and himself in December 2012.

The lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Jackson County circuit court, alleges that Belcher “unknowingly sacrificed his brain” during a four-year career with the Chiefs. It also alleges that the team failed to protect Belcher and his safety and knew, or should’ve known, that Belcher showed signs of cognitive and neuro-psychiatric impairment. Belcher’s body was exhumed at the request of his family at the North Babylon Cemetery in Bay Shore, N.Y., two weeks ago. His brain is being examined for evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. The family is awaiting final results.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday alleges “wrongful conduct” by the Chiefs that “destroyed multiple lives.” The suit specifically mentions CTE many times.[...]

Belcher killed his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, with nine gunshots Dec. 1, 2012, at the home they shared. He then drove to the Chiefs’ practice facility and killed himself with a single shot to the head, leaving their daughter orphaned. Belcher’s mother, Cheryl Shepherd, and Zoey were both in the home when Belcher, 25, killed Perkins.

Belcher had no documented history of concussions or other head injuries. The lawsuit alleges the Chiefs missed signs of concussions, including one allegedly suffered in a game against the Bengals on Nov. 18, 2012, on a play that ended up being Belcher’s last tackle.

The suit also mentions changes in Belcher’s behavior, including mood swings, and alleges that the Chiefs “directly caused or directly contributed to cause” Belcher to develop neurological impairments or damage.[...]

The suit says Belcher was knocked unconscious during a game against the Jaguars in 2009 but was not immediately evaluated or given time to fully recover before resuming practice. It also says the team assumed a duty to provide competent health care for Belcher when it ordered him to see a counselor on at least two occasions in October and November of 2012.

Blog author's comments - Could it be that Jovan Belcher's mother foresees, in the not to distant future, that she will not be living a life of luxury because her son's money will be gone? Responsibility is a dirty word to many people. Jovan Belcher was old enough to think for himself. He committed a terrible crime. It is unlikely that football did it. The gun didn't do it. Jovan Belcher did it.

So Belcher's mother hired a lawyer to go after the Kansas City Chiefs' owners with hopes that the Chiefs won't want to fight the suit and give the mother a large amount of money which will keep both her and her attorney rich for quite some time. Many on the left do not like football or the NFL, and if they had their way football would be banned for not only the professional players but also college, high school and youth leagues. I hope the Chiefs fight the suit.

I am guessing that this young man played football for years, probably since he was a child, so to say that injuries occurred which made him commit the crime, and take his own life, while he was with the Chiefs is overreaching. How can what Jovan Belcher did be blamed on football...because his mother has a chance to make, she hopes, a lot of money. Did his mother try to stop him from playing or was she just happy when he signed his multimillion dollar contract with the Kansas City Chiefs?
