Fox News -- Rep. Darrell Issa pressed ahead with a committee vote Wednesday to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, despite an eleventh-hour move by President Obama to exert executive privilege over the Fast and Furious documents at the heart of the dispute.
The announcement touched off a caustic debate on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that lasted into the afternoon, as Democrats accused Issa of prosecuting a "political witch hunt" and Republicans stepped up their criticism of Holder's "stonewalling" over the Fast and Furious probe. Even for Washington, the tone at the hearing was decidedly bitter and accusatory.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee was first informed of the president's decision to exert executive privilege in a letter Wednesday morning, shortly before the contempt vote was scheduled.
Issa said committee staff are evaluating the letter but described the move as too little, too late as he and other GOP lawmakers questioned the basis for the assertion.
"This untimely assertion by the Justice Department falls short of any reason to delay today's proceedings," Issa said.
Blog author's comments - Obama invoked executive privilege protecting the release of the Fast and Furious documents. The main reason Obama did this was to shield himself. This was a government program put together I must assume under the approval of Obama and AG Eric Holder. This program led to the death of border agent Brian Terry and hundreds of people in Mexico.
A huge number of guns were purchased in Arizona by 'straw' buyers and 'walked' across the border into Mexico with the intent to show the people in our country how easy it is for drug cartels to purchase guns in the US. This was done as an assault on the Second Amendment with hope that the American people would agree that more and tighter gun control laws were needed.
The reason Obama made his move today was because Congressman Issa planned to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for not being truthful to the committee and refusing to provide them the documentation they had asked for months ago.
For Obama to use executive privilege so the documents do not have to be released should show everyone that not only Holder, but also Obama knew about the Fast and Furious scheme. Why else protect the documents or in this case evidence against the Obama administration?
Full House to vote next week.
